St Petersburg

The first place we stayed was very strange, a flat with two rooms to be rented and a (Scarily) crazy lady looking after it, with a bit of sign language we established that she and her husband had been married for 23 years or that they had 23 children. Quick dinner over the road, salad was translated as 'Green Stuff', which I thought was great.

Got up to an uncomfortable breakfast and then hit town. Walked to the Peter and Paul Fortress. This was built by Peter the Great to keep the Swedish Invaders out and later to keep prisoners in.

The central piece of the island is the Peter and Paul Cathedral where many of the Tsars are buried. The bones of Nicholas II and family were finally laid to rest here in 1998 after their 1918 murder.

There's a midday gun from the fortress that is suprisingly loud and best of all a museum for the cosmonauts with a replica of the space capsule, very interesting.

Got soaked when a massive rain storm appeared out of clear skies, hadn't taken any waterproofs out which was not ideal.

Had a wander into the main part of town, Nevsky Prospect is the main street, was pleased to see lots of little stalls selling refreshments, it's common to see people of all walks of life wandering along the road with a beer at all times of the day so we were soon blending in with the locals!
